This book is not a dramatization. It is fact.
It is the story of a man driven by a boyhood commitment, who struggled through France in
Patton’s Third Army and upon returning at the end of the war, continued that boyhood quest. It is also
the story of his marriage to a life time partner and their journey together, along with their children, to the
people of one of the greatest river basins on earth. This is a story about man in the developed world,
coming face to face with his most primitive past, and about the unclouded realization that the brutality of
modern warfare has a history as old as man. This is a story of a family’s affections for its neighbors
spreading like ripples from a pebble cast in a lake. It is a story of primitive man peering out at a world
that had evolved, watching its rituals of dress and habit.
I have walked in his footsteps, seen the trails that he had traversed and ridden river boats up and
down the Maranon River. That river can bury a town in an instant with its great body of silt drifting
down to the sea. Man’s life is but an instant in this, the largest river basin on earth.
